Design
My approach for the UX design of this site was to emulate the flow of a slide deck. Big visuals and minimal text with keyboard navigation (left/right arrows and escape key). I set out to tell a story in linear form.
Swiss style inspired the visual design, focusing on large, simple fonts. I wanted aesthetic contrast without compromising accessibility. I use Grilli Type's GT America typeface for my brand and throughout the site.
Tools/software
- Figma and Nova for design/markup
- Built/maintained with Middleman, iTerm, Github, and Netlify
- Vanilla HTML, CSS, and Javascript
- Hemingway Editor to keep my verbosity in check
Accessibility
I aim for my site to be 100% accessible. This is and has always been front of mind for me. Validators aren’t absolute, because some characteristics need human verification. But WAVE validates my work (with contrast manually verified). I test my designs with Color Oracle and my code/interactions with Apple VoiceOver.
Environmental Sustainability
Only 0.03g of CO2 is produced every time someone visits my site. This is cleaner than 97% of all websites, globally. The W3C’s Sustainable Web Design community group created the rating system. It comprises 94 recommendations.
Performance
I use proper image-compression and coding techniques for accessibility, sustainability, and page-speed performance:
- W3C-validated markup
- Perfect page-speed bench mark score of 100, for both small/large-screen environments
